2016 seemed like a low-budget horror film that justified its terrible plot with an impeccable soundtrack. Amongst the constant bullsh*t that was continuously thrown at the world politically and socially this year, musicians of every genre took it upon themselves to cure our suffering with fresh, groundbreaking music. As 2016 finally comes to an end, I believe it's only fair that we make a toast to the most iconic albums of the year.
Rihanna's ANTI: Merlot
ANTI was edgy, seductive, and showed the world that bad b*tches can fall in love too. Just like this album, Merlot is typically underrated because of its darker, bitter nature. However, the subtle hints of fruit make this wine the perfect match for ANTI's fierce and sexual emotions.
Kanye West's The Life of Pablo: Bacardi Rum
The Life of Pablo was nothing short of artistic. No matter who you are or what your opinion is of him, everyone can agree that Kanye West is a highly respected individual that has greatly influenced the hip-hop nation. With that being said, you can absolutely hate rum, but if it's what's being served at a party, you're probably still going to enjoy it.
Solange's A Seat at the Table: Champagne
Solange soothed our aggressions of the year with this calm yet sophisticated album. A Seat at the Table is light, bubbly, and makes you feel a newfound hope and happiness, despite its solemn lyrics.
Childish Gambino's "Awaken, My Love!": Jim Beam Bourbon
"Awaken, My Love!" became quite controversial among Childish Gambino fans when they realized that it wasn't a new rap album. Despite this change, the upbeat, groovy music alongside Gambino's eclectic voice still surpassed expectations. Much like bourbon whiskey, this album has an acquired taste that only those who can appreciate a mature yet cultured sound can vibe to.
Frank Ocean's Blonde: Bombay Sapphire Gin
The album we all impatiently waited for did not disappoint. It wasn't quite the Channel Orange we were expecting, but we could still appreciate Frank Ocean's new artistic approach on Blonde. Intense, refined, and aromatic, Frank's new masterpiece pairs very well with gin, which is really just an abstract version of vodka.
ScHoolboy Q's Blank Face LP: Olde English Malt Liquor
This pairing is best enjoyed on a spontaneous and carefree night out with some friends. Grab a couple of cheap 40's, and let loose to ScHoolboy Q's catchy yet charismatic verses. Even when life gets tough, this album will surely remind you that having fun doesn't have to be.
Drake's Views: Patrón Tequila
Views was yet another Drake album we could bump to while simultaneously grieving over our love lives — or lack thereof. Pair this 4x Platinum album with a few shots of tequila and you'll definitely go hard... at first. Just give it some time though because by the end of the night, you'll probably end up on the floor hysterically crying over your ex. It's just what Drake would want.
The Chainsmoker's Collage EP: Natural Light Beer
Because you're not really listening to "Closer" if you're not in a frat house chugging a cheap, watered-down beer.
Beyoncé's Lemonade: Grey Goose Vodka
Lemonade was the empowerment every woman needed in a year focused on white male privilege. You'll want to pair this album with an alcohol that's straight forward, to the point, and will give you the same amount of confidence Beyoncé had when she slayed the entire music industry, as well as every unfaithful man in the world. I'll take a vodka on rocks, please.
Kendrick Lamar's untitled unmastered.: Hennessy Cognac
Kendrick took us all by surprise when he released this collection of "untitled" tracks. It's a little less aggressive but gets a lot more deep, which is why a bottle of Henny is perfect for this jazzy yet contemplative soundtrack.
Chance the Rapper's Coloring Book: Sacramental Wine
Chance basically took you to church with this soulful album, so it's only appropriate that we celebrate his glory with a ceremonial wine. There is no doubt that this album helped make Chance the prominent figure he currently is in the music world. However, all of his praise is well justified.
Ariana Grande's Dangerous Woman: Pink Moscato
What's girly, sweet, and makes you feel like a dangerous woman even when you're sipping on something pink? Ariana Grande's album and pink Moscato. Her high notes blend perfectly with the fruity notes of this white wine and together create a beautiful and feminine melody any woman can enjoy.
The 1975's I like it when you sleep, for you are so beautiful yet so unaware of it: Mike's Hard Lemonade
Mike's Hard Lemonade is the alcoholic beverage of fragility despite its claim of being "hard." It's what your girlfriend likes to drink because she likes to party but is also aware of her limit. Just like this album, Mike's Hard is overly sweet and fruity but can still be enjoyed (sometimes in secret) by the masses.
We're all hopeful for a better year in 2017, but it's going to be pretty difficult to top the overwhelming amount of incredible music that's been released this year. Cheers to a Happy New Year, but please drink responsibly!
